Vasculitis and the legs
Vasculitis is inflammation of the blood vessels, and when it affects the legs it can cause red or purple spots, tender skin, swelling and, in some cases, leg ulcers. At Charming Skin & Vein Clinics, we focus on the venous side of leg symptoms and help you understand how your veins may be involved.
Quick answer
Vasculitis means inflammation of the blood vessels. When it affects the legs, it often appears as small red or purple spots (purpura), tender skin, swelling, and sometimes slow-healing ulcers. Vasculitis itself is usually diagnosed and managed by a rheumatologist or dermatologist, but a careful venous evaluation helps clarify how much of your leg heaviness, swelling or skin change may be related to your veins — and what can be done to ease those symptoms.
What is vasculitis affecting the legs?
Vasculitis describes a group of conditions in which the blood vessels become inflamed. Small-vessel vasculitis frequently shows up in the lower legs, where gravity and pooling can make the affected skin more noticeable. The inflammation can involve tiny surface vessels, and in some people the legs also carry separate vein problems such as varicose veins or venous insufficiency. Because the symptoms can overlap, it helps to sort out which findings come from the veins and which need attention from a specialist in inflammatory conditions.
Common signs in the legs
- Small red or purple spots that can be felt as raised bumps (palpable purpura)
- Aching, heaviness or tenderness in the lower legs
- Swelling around the ankles and lower legs
- Skin discoloration or darkening over the affected area
- Slow-healing sores or leg ulcers in more advanced cases
- Visible varicose or surface veins that may add to the discomfort
Why a venous evaluation matters
Vasculitis and vein disease can produce similar leg symptoms — swelling, aching, heaviness and skin changes — so it is helpful to know how your veins are working. A venous evaluation does not diagnose or treat vasculitis itself, but it clarifies whether varicose veins or venous insufficiency are contributing to your discomfort. When an inflammatory cause is suspected, we encourage evaluation with the appropriate specialist so you receive the right care.
How we evaluate and treat the vein-related symptoms
At Charming Skin & Vein Clinics, Dr. Abboud draws on more than 20 years of experience caring for complex vein problems to assess the legs, map the veins and explain what we are seeing. Here is how we typically help with the venous side of your symptoms:
- Ultrasound vein diagnosis to map the veins and check how blood is flowing before any treatment is considered
- Varicose vein treatment for symptomatic, enlarged surface veins
- Spider vein treatment for smaller clustered surface veins
- Compression therapy to support the legs and help manage swelling and discomfort
Related vein conditions
- Vein symptoms & conditions (overview hub)
- Vein wall weakness
- Arteriovenous communication in the veins
- May-Thurner syndrome
Common questions
When should I see a vein doctor about leg symptoms?
It is reasonable to see a vein specialist if you have visible varicose veins, leg swelling, aching, heaviness, skin changes or recurring discomfort in the legs. An evaluation helps clarify which veins are involved and which symptoms may be addressed. If an inflammatory cause such as vasculitis is suspected, we will encourage you to also see the appropriate specialist.
Is treatment covered by insurance?
Most PPO plans and Medicare cover treatment for symptomatic veins. Coverage depends on your plan and on documentation from your evaluation. Vein work done purely for cosmetic reasons is self-pay. Our team can help you understand your options.
What should I expect at a free vein screening?
A free vein screening is a relaxed, informational visit. We review your history and symptoms, look at the affected legs and talk through what we observe and the next steps that may make sense for you. There is no pressure to commit to treatment.
