Dermal Facial Fillers
Dermal facial fillers are injectable gel treatments, most often based on hyaluronic acid, that add volume beneath the skin to soften lines, restore fullness, and refine facial contours. They offer a non-surgical option for the changes that come with age, weight shifts, or the natural loss of facial volume over time.
How facial fillers work
Most modern fillers use a smooth gel that is placed into specific areas of the face to replace lost volume or support the surrounding tissue. Hyaluronic acid is a substance the body produces naturally, which is why it is commonly used in this type of treatment. Depending on the product and the area treated, results are temporary and gradually fade as the material is absorbed by the body over a period of months.
Types of facial fillers
Several types of filler are available, and the right choice depends on your goals and what a qualified provider recommends for your anatomy:
- Hyaluronic acid fillers (such as Juvederm and Restylane): add volume and soften wrinkles and fine lines; effects are typically temporary and gradually absorbed.
- Calcium hydroxylapatite fillers (such as Radiesse): often used for deeper folds and to support facial contours.
- Poly-L-lactic acid fillers: work gradually to help restore volume over a series of sessions.
- Collagen-stimulating and longer-lasting options: may be considered for certain concerns, depending on individual assessment.
Areas commonly treated
Fillers may be used to address smile lines around the nose and mouth, hollowing in the cheeks or under the eyes, thinning lips, and changes along the jawline or chin. The right approach depends on facial anatomy, individual goals, and what is appropriate for each person, which is why treatment is planned on an individual basis.
Indications for facial fillers
- Wrinkles and fine lines: softening lines around the eyes, mouth, and forehead.
- Volume loss: restoring fullness in areas such as the cheeks and lips.
- Facial contouring: refining the shape and balance of the face.
What to expect and recovery
A treatment session is typically brief, and many people return to everyday activities the same day. Temporary swelling, redness, or bruising at the injection sites can occur and usually settles within a few days. A follow-up visit may be recommended to review results. Specific outcomes and timelines vary from person to person and are discussed during your consultation.
