Veins Specialist What a Vein Specialist Treats (and When to See One)

A vein specialist focuses on the health of your veins — the vessels that carry blood back to your heart. When the small valves inside leg veins weaken, blood can pool, leading to visible veins, aching, and swelling. Knowing what a vein specialist actually treats, and when those symptoms are worth a closer look, helps you decide whether it is time to be seen. At Charming Skin & Vein Clinics, Dr. Abboud brings more than 20 years of experience caring for patients with venous concerns.

What a Vein Specialist Treats

Vein care covers a range of conditions, most of which involve poor circulation in the legs rather than appearance alone. Common reasons people see a vein specialist include:

  • Varicose veins — the larger, rope-like veins that can ache or throb after standing.
  • Spider veins — smaller, web-like surface veins, often a cosmetic concern but sometimes a sign of underlying venous issues.
  • Leg heaviness, swelling, cramping, restless legs, and skin changes near the ankles.
  • Underlying valve problems identified through ultrasound vein diagnosis.

You can read more about the full range of vein symptoms and conditions we evaluate.

When to See a Vein Specialist

Many people assume vein issues are only about looks, but persistent symptoms are worth attention. Consider an evaluation if you notice:

  • Aching, heaviness, or fatigue in the legs that worsens by the end of the day.
  • Swelling around the ankles or lower legs.
  • Bulging veins, itching, or skin discoloration.
  • Night cramps or restless legs that disrupt sleep.

Early evaluation often means simpler, less involved care. A screening can confirm whether your symptoms are linked to vein function and what, if anything, may help.

How We Help

Treatment begins with a careful exam and, when appropriate, ultrasound to map how blood is moving through the leg. Based on what we find, options may include compression therapy for symptom relief, or minimally invasive procedures such as endovenous laser treatment (EVLA), Varithena foam treatment, or VenaSeal closure. The right approach depends on your symptoms and what the evaluation shows. Most PPO plans and Medicare cover treatment for symptomatic veins; purely cosmetic vein work is self-pay.
