What a Vein Specialist Does
A vein specialist focuses on the veins of the legs, the circulation problems behind them, and the symptoms they cause. This is the area we work in every day. Care centers on diagnosing the underlying cause and treating it with minimally invasive, in-office procedures rather than open surgery.
A vein specialist commonly evaluates and treats:
- Varicose veins that bulge, throb, or feel heavy
- Spider veins, the smaller web-like clusters near the surface
- Leg swelling, aching, cramping, and restlessness tied to vein conditions
Diagnosis usually begins with an ultrasound vein evaluation to map blood flow and find faulty valves. Treatment may include endovenous laser (EVLA), Varithena foam, or VenaSeal closure, often supported by compression therapy.
What a Vascular Surgeon Does
A vascular surgeon manages the entire vascular system, including arteries throughout the body, and is trained to perform major open surgery. Their scope reaches well beyond leg veins to conditions such as aneurysms, carotid artery disease, and serious arterial blockages.
Many leg vein problems do not require open surgery and can be addressed with the in-office, minimally invasive approaches a vein specialist uses. A vascular surgeon is the right choice when a complex arterial or whole-body vascular issue is involved, and that often means a hospital setting rather than an outpatient visit.
What a Dermatologist Does
A dermatologist specializes in the skin. Because spider veins sit close to the surface, dermatologists sometimes treat them cosmetically, and they remain the right choice for skin conditions, lesions, and rashes.
The key difference is the underlying cause. Visible veins are frequently a sign of vein circulation problems beneath the skin. Treating only the surface appearance can leave that cause unaddressed, which is why a vein-focused evaluation matters when symptoms such as aching, swelling, or recurring veins are present.
