If you have been putting off doing something about achy, heavy, or visibly enlarged leg veins, knowing what a Chicago vein visit actually involves can make the first step easier. This guide walks through what to expect at your appointment, what to bring, and how we approach vein care so you can show up prepared and at ease.
What to Bring to Your Vein Appointment
A little preparation helps us make the most of your time. When you come in for your visit, it helps to bring the following:
- A photo ID and your insurance card.
- A list of current medications, including blood thinners and supplements.
- Any prior imaging, ultrasound reports, or records related to your legs or circulation.
- Loose clothing, so your legs can be examined comfortably.
- A few notes on your symptoms, such as when your legs feel heaviest or whether swelling worsens by the end of the day.
If you have already tried compression stockings, let us know how they have helped, since that information is useful for both your evaluation and your insurance.
What Happens During Your Visit
Your first appointment focuses on understanding what is going on with your leg veins and what is causing your symptoms. A typical visit includes a conversation about your history and symptoms, a physical examination of your legs, and often a painless ultrasound vein evaluation to look at how blood is moving through your veins. This helps distinguish between a cosmetic concern and an underlying issue such as venous reflux.
From there, we explain what we find in plain language and discuss whether your symptoms point toward conditions covered in our overview of vein symptoms and conditions. There is no pressure to decide anything on the spot.
How We Approach Treatment
If treatment makes sense, we walk you through the options that fit your situation. For larger, symptomatic veins these may include varicose vein treatment using modern, minimally invasive techniques. Smaller surface veins are often addressed with spider vein treatment. The goal is to match the approach to your anatomy and your goals, not to push a single procedure. Most treatments are performed in the office, and many patients return to normal daily activities soon after.
Our care is led by Dr. Abboud, who brings more than 20 years of experience to every evaluation. A graduate of the University of Damascus, Dr. Abboud completed residency training at Cook County Hospital and John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital in Chicago.
Insurance, Cost, and Locations
Many patients are surprised to learn that vein care is often a medical matter, not just a cosmetic one. Most PPO plans and Medicare cover treatment for symptomatic veins. Purely cosmetic vein work is self-pay. During your visit we can review your symptoms and coverage so you know what to expect before moving forward.
We see patients at three convenient locations: Chicago at 5907 W. 63rd St.; Oak Brook at 2425 W. 22nd St. #205; and Orland Park at 10 Orland Square Dr. You can find more details on the areas we serve on our service areas page.
