If you’ve been told a vein problem means a hospital stay, that advice is out of date. For most people with symptomatic leg veins, modern treatment now happens in a comfortable office setting, in well under an hour, with no general anesthesia and no overnight stay. At Charming Skin & Vein Clinics, Dr. Abboud brings more than 20 years of experience to in-office vein care, so you can walk in, have your procedure, and usually walk out and resume light daily activity the same day.
Why vein treatment left the operating room
For decades, the main option for varicose veins was vein stripping, a surgical procedure done in a hospital under general anesthesia. Today, image-guided techniques have largely replaced it. Using ultrasound to map and target the affected vein, these procedures close or seal the problem vein from the inside through a tiny access point, with local anesthesia only.
Because the approach is minimally invasive, the experience is very different from traditional surgery:
- Local anesthesia instead of general anesthesia
- A single small needle or catheter access point, not an incision and stitches
- Most appointments completed in roughly 30 to 60 minutes
- Same-day return home, with many people back to light activity the same day
Common in-office procedures we offer
The right option depends on which veins are involved and what an ultrasound vein evaluation shows. Procedures we perform in our offices include:
- Endovenous laser ablation (EVLA), which uses laser energy to close a larger underlying vein
- Varithena foam treatment, an injectable foam for certain twisted or hard-to-reach veins
- VenaSeal closure, which seals the vein with a medical adhesive
- Treatment for varicose veins and spider veins
For some patients, compression therapy is recommended first or alongside treatment. We talk through what fits your situation rather than applying a one-size-fits-all plan.
What the day actually looks like
Care starts with a diagnostic ultrasound so we understand how blood is flowing in your legs and which vein is causing symptoms. On the day of the procedure you remain awake and comfortable. Afterward, you typically put on a compression stocking and can walk out on your own. We give you clear aftercare instructions, and because there is no general anesthesia, you are not recovering from being put under.
Insurance and getting started
Most PPO plans and Medicare cover treatment for symptomatic veins, such as aching, swelling, heaviness, or skin changes. Purely cosmetic vein work is self-pay. We can review your symptoms and help you understand which category your situation may fall under before anything is scheduled.
