One of the most common questions we hear before a vein procedure is simple: what happens afterward? The good news is that modern vein treatments are minimally invasive, and recovery is usually far gentler than most people expect. Here is an honest look at what the days and weeks after treatment really involve, so you can plan with confidence.
The First 24 to 48 Hours
Most vein procedures, including endovenous laser (EVLA), Varithena foam treatment, and VenaSeal closure, are done in the office and take about an hour. You walk in and walk out the same day. There is no general anesthesia and no hospital stay.
In the first day or two you can expect:
- Mild soreness, tightness, or a pulling sensation along the treated vein
- Some bruising, which is normal and fades over time
- A bandage or compression stocking we ask you to keep on as directed
Walking is encouraged right away. Gentle movement helps circulation and is an important part of healthy recovery.
Getting Back to Daily Life
Most people return to work and normal routines within a day, sometimes the same afternoon. We typically ask you to avoid strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, and long periods of sitting or standing still for about a week. Short, frequent walks are better than sitting for hours.
Compression therapy plays a real role here. Wearing your stockings as directed supports the treated leg and helps reduce swelling while the vein settles. We will explain exactly how long to wear them based on the procedure you had and the condition we treated, whether it relates to varicose veins or smaller surface vessels.
How Results Appear Over Time
Recovery from vein treatment is gradual, not instant. The treated vein closes and is slowly absorbed by the body, so visible improvement and symptom relief build over several weeks. Heaviness, aching, and swelling often ease first, while the cosmetic appearance of spider veins or bulging veins continues to improve in the following weeks and months.
A follow-up ultrasound may be used to confirm the vein has closed properly. Everyone heals at a slightly different pace, and we will set realistic expectations for your specific situation rather than promising a single timeline.
When to Call Us
Some bruising and tenderness are expected, but you should reach out if you notice increasing pain, significant swelling, warmth, or anything that does not feel right. We would always rather hear from you and check than have you wonder. Our team is here to guide you through the full recovery, not just the appointment.
Dr. Abboud brings more than 20 years of experience caring for patients with vein conditions. A graduate of the University of Damascus, he completed his residency at Cook County Hospital and John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital in Chicago, and he focuses on helping each patient understand both the procedure and what comes after. Most PPO plans and Medicare cover treatment for symptomatic veins; cosmetic vein work is self-pay.
